# Opening behavior

> Choose whether links open in Traycer or your default browser, and whether new tiles open in the current pane or a new split.

**Opening behavior** decides where links and new tiles land when you open them. It sits in the **Application** group of [Settings](/settings).

## Links

**Open links** sets where a link opens when you click it:

| Option | What it does |
| - | - |
| **In Traycer** | Opens the link in Traycer's [in-app browser](/panels/browsers). This is the default. |
| **In default browser** | Opens the link in your computer's default browser. |
| **Per link type** | Shows one row per kind of link, each set to **In Traycer** or **In default browser**. |

With **Per link type**, the rows are:

| Link type | Covers |
| - | - |
| **Markdown** | Links in chat, artifacts, the communication graph and Markdown previews. |
| **Terminal** | URLs and hyperlinks a terminal prints. |
| **GitHub** | Pull request rows and headers, commits, and worktree pull request chips. |
| **Images** | Images opened from the image viewer. |

## Tile Placement

**Open new tiles** sets where a newly opened tile goes:

| Option | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Per tile type** | Shows one row per kind of tile, each set to **In this pane** or **In a new split**. This is the default. |
| **In this pane** | Opens every new tile as a tab in the current pane. |
| **In a new split** | Opens every new tile in a new pane beside the current one. |

With **Per tile type**, the rows and their defaults are:

| Tile type | Covers | Default |
| - | - | - |
| **Files, diffs & artifacts** | Files, diffs, pull requests, artifacts, command output and the communication graph. | In this pane |
| **Agents & terminals** | Chats, agents and terminal sessions. | In this pane |
| **Side chats** | Asides started with `/btw` or `/side`, placed next to the chat they were asked from. | In a new split |

Browser tabs have their own placement, **Open browser tabs**, on the [Browser](/settings/browser#browser-placement) settings page.

Windows too narrow to show more than one tile open everything in the current pane, whatever these settings say.

## Modifier Clicks

Modifier keys override these settings for one click:

| Click | What it does |
| - | - |
| <kbd>Cmd</kbd>-click / <kbd>Ctrl</kbd>-click | Opens a link in your default browser. |
| <kbd>Opt</kbd>-click / <kbd>Alt</kbd>-click | Opens a link the other way from your **Open links** setting. |
| <kbd>Shift</kbd>-click | Opens a tile in a new split. |
| Middle-click | Opens a tile in the background. |

For how panes, tabs and splits work, see [Panels](/panels).
