# General

> Composer behavior, keeping the computer awake while agents run, the worktree branch prefix, experimental features, and resetting this device's app state.

**General** holds app behavior that doesn't belong to a provider, a host, or one part of the app. It sits in the **Application** group of [Settings](/settings). Most settings apply to the app on this device, whichever host you are looking at; automatic chat archiving applies to your account across hosts.

## Chat & Composer

| Setting | Default | What it does |
| - | - | - |
| **Voice input** | On | Dictate prompts with the composer's mic button or <kbd>Ctrl</kbd> + <kbd>Shift</kbd> + <kbd>M</kbd> (the same keys on macOS). The microphone opens only while you are dictating, and turning this off closes it. Audio never leaves your machine. The language you speak is detected automatically. |
| **Quote reply on text selection** | On | Selecting text in an agent's reply shows a quote button that inserts the selection into the composer. |
| **Steer with ⌘+Enter** (**Steer with Ctrl+Enter** on Windows and Linux) | On | While a turn is running, <kbd>Cmd</kbd> + <kbd>Enter</kbd> / <kbd>Ctrl</kbd> + <kbd>Enter</kbd> sends the composer text into that turn as a steering message, ahead of the queue. Plain <kbd>Enter</kbd> still queues. Works with agents that support steering; see [Message queue](/panels/agents/message-queue). |

To hide the mic button but keep the dictation shortcut, set **Microphone** to **Hidden** in [Layout](/settings/layout#composer) instead of turning voice input off.

## Running Agents

**Prevent sleep while running** keeps the computer awake while an agent is running, so work continues when you step away. It is off by default.

## Automatically Archive Idle Chats

In **General › Agents**, turn on **Archive idle agents automatically**. It is off by default. The setting applies across your hosts and initially includes only chats started by agents. While it is on, two options appear under it:

* **Archive after** sets how long a chat must be idle. Pick a preset from 1 hour to 30 days, or choose **Custom…** to enter a number of minutes, hours or days.
* **Include chats I started** archives your own chats too. Terminal agent chats count as yours, so they are included only with this option on.

Turning the setting off hides the options and keeps your choices for the next time you turn it on.

The host skips chats that are being viewed or still have work running. Archiving is applied when a host next looks at the chat's Task, rather than at an exact deadline. Sending a new message unarchives the chat.

## When You Quit Traycer

On Desktop, **General › Agents › When you quit Traycer** controls the host on this computer, regardless of which host is selected in Settings.

| Choice | What happens |
| - | - |
| **Keep the host running in the background** (default) | Starts the host at login and keeps work running after you quit Traycer. Other devices can still connect to it. |
| **Ask me each time** | Starts the host with Traycer and asks whether to keep work running or stop it when you quit. |
| **Stop the host if nothing is running, otherwise ask** | Starts the host with Traycer. On quit, stops an idle host automatically and asks if work is running or the host reports terminals still in use. |
| **Stop the host with the app** | Starts the host with Traycer and stops it when you quit, ending work running on it. |
| **Don't run a host on this computer** | Uses remote hosts instead of starting a local host. Choosing this while Traycer manages a local host asks you to confirm stopping it. |

If a terminal is still in use, you can keep the host running so it carries on, stop the host and quit, or cancel quitting. Stopping the host ends that terminal.

A host you started manually in a terminal keeps running when you quit Desktop. If Settings says a restart is needed to apply your choice, follow that notice.

You can also inspect or change the choice with the [host lifecycle CLI commands](/cli/commands#host-lifecycle).

## Worktrees

**Default branch prefix** is the start of every branch name Traycer creates for a new worktree. The default is `traycer/`.

* The row previews an example branch name, such as "New branches start like `traycer/<name>`", and updates as you type.
* Changes save automatically. The reset button next to the field restores `traycer/`.
* Leave the field empty to create branches with no prefix.
* A prefix can be up to 40 characters. It can't contain spaces, `~ ^ : ? * [ \`, `..` or `@{`, can't start with `-` or `/`, and can't contain `//`. No part between slashes can start with `.` or end with `.lock`.

A repository can set its own prefix in `<repo>/.traycer/environment.json`, which takes precedence over this one for that repository. See [Setup and teardown scripts](/concepts/worktrees/scripts).

## Experimental

**Agent roles** lets agents claim durable responsibilities, called roles, and coordinate through role-aware tools and prompts. It is off by default. Agents claim, list, and release roles with `traycer agent role claim`, `traycer agent role list`, and `traycer agent role relinquish`; see [CLI commands](/cli/commands).

## Danger Zone

**Clear local app state** resets this device's app state, then reloads the app:

* open tabs and layout
* drafts
* settings and view preferences

You stay signed in, and nothing on your hosts or in your Tasks is deleted. Traycer asks you to confirm first, and the reset can't be undone.

File edit snapshots are cleared per host, from **Host › Overview › Data**; see [Overview](/settings/host).

## Desktop Only

The mobile app doesn't show **Voice input**, **Prevent sleep while running**, or the **Experimental** group.

## Moved Settings

Several rows that used to be on this page now live elsewhere:

| Former setting | Where it is now |
| - | - |
| **Notify on agent turn completion** | The **Done** severity in Host › [Notifications](/settings/notifications), and the **Done** chime in [Sounds](/settings/sounds). |
| **Local snapshots**, **Clear local snapshots** | **File edit snapshots** in Host › Overview › **Data**, per host. See [Overview](/settings/host). |
| **Data migration** | **Import & migration** in Host › Overview › **Data**. See [Overview](/settings/host). |
| Default permission mode | **Modes** in [Permissions](/settings/permissions). |
| Product tour | **Initial tour** in [Getting started](/settings/getting-started). |
| Resource monitor and resource-stat toggles, **Pin context usage breakdown**, **Home tab** | [Layout](/settings/layout). |
