# Agent selection

> Edit the instructions Traycer agents follow when they pick a coding agent, model, and reasoning effort for a child agent.

**Agent selection** holds the instructions Traycer agents follow when they create or reconfigure a child agent: which coding agent to use, which model, and how much reasoning effort.

This page configures *how a coding agent gets chosen*. It does not manage the agents inside a Task; those live in the [Agents](/panels/agents) panel. For the coordination model, see [Agent-to-Agent](/concepts/agent-to-agent).

## What The Guide Covers

The agent selection guide is Markdown, written for agents. Use it to say:

* which coding agent to use for delegated work
* which model and thinking effort to prefer
* how to route implementation, review, and exploration work

Agents read the guide before they create or reconfigure a child agent.

## The Global Guide

Settings edits the global guide on the host selected with the host switcher at the top of the Settings sidebar; see [Host Picker](/settings#host-picker). On that host, the file is:

```text theme={null}
~/.traycer/agent-selection-guide.md
```

The editor has **Edit** and **Preview** tabs. It saves as you type and when you leave it; the status next to it reads **Saving…**, **Saved**, or **Not saved** if a save failed.

**Revert to default** replaces the guide with a default built from the providers available on that host. It asks first, and your custom instructions are lost.

## Workspace Guides

For a specific repo, add a workspace guide at:

```text theme={null}
<workspace>/.traycer/agent-selection-guide.md
```

Write it in the repo directly; Settings edits only the global guide.

Every guide that exists applies. Workspace guides come first, then the global guide, so a workspace guide refines the global one instead of replacing it. Use one when a repo needs different agent choices, models, review expectations, or implementation preferences.

## What It Doesn't Configure

The guide applies to Traycer agents only. Subagents that a coding agent starts on its own follow that provider's configuration and have no Traycer agent ID.

For how child agents appear in the Agents tree, see [Agents](/panels/agents). For supported coding agents, see [Agents & Models](/agents-and-models/coding-agents).
