# File Tree

The **File Tree** panel lets you browse a workspace folder.

Use it to inspect files, open files in an external editor, or copy file paths. It is read-only: you can't create, rename, move, or delete files from the tree.

Open it from the **File Tree** icon in the sidebar rail. Click a folder to expand it. Click a file to open it in a preview tab; double-click to keep the tab open.

<FeatureVideo src="https://assets.traycer.ai/docs/videos/file-tree-panel.mp4" label="Open File Tree, expand folders, and preview a file" />

Drag a file or folder into the agent composer to insert an inline mention. This works when the file is on the same host as the composer. See the [file context demo](/panels/agents#attachments-and-voice). You can also drag a file onto the canvas to open it there.

## Workspace Picker

The picker at the top of the panel chooses which folder the tree shows. It lists hosts and their workspace folders, with "Search repo, branch, or path…" to find one.

## Filter Files

Type in "Filter files by name…" to narrow the tree. If nothing matches, the panel says "No files match the filter." Very large result sets show only the first matches; narrow the filter to see more.

In very large workspaces, some folders hold more files than the tree can show. The panel says so rather than listing them all.

## Right-Click Menu

Right-click a file or folder for:

| Item | What it does |
| - | - |
| An editor name | Open the item in that editor. Traycer lists the editors it finds installed: VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Zed, VSCodium, and Code - OSS. |
| **Finder** | Show the item in Finder. macOS only. |
| **Copy Path** | Copy the full path. |
| **Copy Relative Path** | Copy the path relative to the workspace folder. |

Editors and Finder appear only when the tree shows a folder on this computer. On a remote host, the menu offers only the copy actions.

## When The Tree Can't Load

| State | What you see |
| - | - |
| No folder selected | "No workspace linked." |
| The host isn't responding | "Can't reach this host", with **Retry**. Pick another host in the picker, or try again. |
| The host returned an error | "Couldn't load workspaces", with the error and **Retry**. |
| The files couldn't be read | "Unable to load files." |
